Alonso Faces Familiar Foe as Real Madrid Prepare for Dortmund Showdown

Xabi Alonso heads into Saturday’s clash with intimate knowledge of his opponents, having faced Borussia Dortmund several times during his tenure as Bayer Leverkusen manager over the past two years. That familiarity could make him cautious about making significant tactical adjustments.

Since arriving in the United States with Real Madrid, the Basque tactician has shifted from his trademark 4-3-3 system to experimenting with a 3-5-2 formation. However, it remains uncertain which setup Alonso will deploy this weekend against the German giants.

A significant selection dilemma looms in attack. Kylian Mbappe, fresh off claiming the La Liga Pichichi award, returned from a bout of gastroenteritis to feature against Juventus. Yet his stand-in, Gonzalo Garcia, has turned heads with four goal contributions so far in the competition, making the choice up front anything but straightforward.

Elsewhere, Jude Bellingham is set to reunite with his former club. The England midfielder, who made 132 appearances for Borussia Dortmund before his high-profile move to Madrid, has already recorded two assists in two games against his old team since the transfer.

However, the anticipated showdown between Jude and his younger brother Jobe Bellingham has been thwarted. The 19-year-old midfielder, who recently joined Dortmund from Sunderland, is suspended after picking up a second yellow card of the tournament during Dortmund’s clash with Monterrey. In Jobe’s absence, Marcel Sabitzer or Julian Brandt could step into the midfield role.

Leading Dortmund’s line is the prolific Serhou Guirassy, who boasts 64 goals in 101 Bundesliga appearances and has already netted three times this summer.

Both sides will be dealing with injury setbacks. Dortmund are without Emre Can, Salih Ozcan, and Nico Schlotterbeck, while Real Madrid remain missing Eduardo Camavinga, David Alaba, Endrick, and Ferland Mendy.

With high stakes and star talent on display, Saturday’s encounter promises fireworks as Alonso’s Madrid seeks to outwit familiar adversaries.
